Despite his name, master chef Michael Weldon {well done, see what we did there?} has absolutely nailed the perfect medium to medium-rare done steak… and he’s shared his secrets with us!
Don’t save steak for special occasions when you are eating dinner out! The tips below not only unlock the secret to plating up restaurant quality steak at home, but by preparing your own steak you’ll be saving $ and have the freedom to choose leaner meat, so ultimately a healthier option (especially given this recipe has no need for high calorie sauces).
Adding some lean steak to a balanced diet has benefits, providing a natural dose of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and more. Not to mention, when cooked to perfection it’s delicious.
The secret to cooking a perfect steak.
Ingredients:
- Steak – we recommend either a tenderloin, porterhouse or scotch fillet (ribeye)
- Oil
- Salt
- Pepper
Method:
An hour before you plan to cook, take your meat out of the fridge so that it can reach room temperature.
Pre-heat your BBQ 10 minutes before, or if you’re using a fry pan (or gridle) pre-heat for 2 minutes, on high heat.
While the grill or pan are heating, rub your steak with a dash of oil and then sprinkle with salt.
When your appliance has reached maximum heat, add the meat. Do not touch! Set a timer for 2-3 minutes (depends a little on the thickness of your meat and how hot your grill is).
When your timer goes off turn your steak over – and do not touch again for another 2-3 minutes.
When the second side has reached its time limit, remove the steak from the grill/stove and rest for 3-5 minutes.
Season with pepper and serve!
Mastering the art of cooking steak to perfection is a valuable life skill. The next time you’re hosting a BBQ or dinner party for friends and family, being able to whip up this classic should bring both a sense of satisfaction and some newfound respect from your guests. 👌🥩
