Natural gas in Koo Wee Rup

With support and funding from the Victorian Government, Australian Gas Networks is proud to have delivered natural gas to Koo Wee Rup (KWR). The project to construct KWR's natural gas network began in 2015 and successfully completed in March 2017. The introduction of natural gas to the KWR community means that more than 1,300 local homeowners and businesses over the next 20 years can benefit from the many advantages of having natural gas connected directly to their properties.

About the project

  • Project commenced in 2015, with the network fully constructed and commissioned March 2017.
  • KWR is one of seven towns to be connected to Victoria's existing natural gas network for the first time.
  • The new network represents a $5.3 million investment by the Victorian Government.
  • The project involved the construction of a 14km supply main, originating from Pakenham South, and more than 10km of residential street mains.
  • More than 1,300 homes and businesses will have the opportunity to connect to natural as over the next 20 years.

Gas availability

The table below shows the streets that are covered by the KWR network. Gas mains do not run down the length of every street - if you can't find your street listed, please give our VIC Marketing Representative a call on (03) 9463 8419 to discuss connecting your property. You can download a map showing the KWR natural gas network here.

Connecting to gas

As of March 2017, the natural gas network in Koo Wee Rup has been fully constructed and gas is now available. Please read below to find out what steps to take to connect natural gas to your home.

For business or commercial enquiries, please Contact Us for further information and assistance.

KWR residential connection process

  • Step 1: Apply for a natural gas connection via your preferred energy retailer - your chosen gasfitter can also apply on your behalf. Your request will be for a gas inlet (i.e. the pipework connection from the gas main in your street to the gas meter location on your property - also called a 'service line'). Note that you can only submit an application to an energy retailer with an established connection process. In Victoria, only the following energy retailers can process and arrange new natural gas connections: Origin Energy (1300 132 480), Energy Australia (1800 818 378), AGL (1800 680 430), Red Energy (131 806).
  • Step 2: Your energy retailer will contact you with an offer to connect.
  • Step3 : Get in touch with a gasfitter for an estimate on what work is required to complete your outlet service (i.e. the pipework connection from the gas meter location to your appliances, in and around your home). Don't forget to check with your gasfitter if:
    • They are qualified to convert LPG appliances to natural gas (if you're planning to convert existing LPG appliances to natural gas).
    • They are currently signed up to AGN's natural gas rebates promotion. If your gasfitter hasn't signed up, they can call the Natural Gas Rebate Team for more information and on how to join (at no cost to them) - we have some very generous rebates available to new gas customers, so it's definitely worth checking this with your gasfitter! (TIP: If you want to browse a current list of gasfitters in the KWR area and who are already signed up to our promotion, just click here to use our online directory).
    • You're eligible for additional rebates/incentives via the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) scheme that the state government runs. This is particularly relevant if you're considering switching over from a standard electric hot water unit to a dedicated natural gas hot water unit.
  • Step 4: If you're happy with the offer to connect, confirm with your chosen energy retailer that you want to proceed with the connection.
  • Step 5: We'll organise for one of our contractors to install the service line at your property.
  • Step 6: Once your service line is installed, check the availability of your gasfitter to conduct site works, and then call your natural gas energy retailer to book a gas meter installation.
  • Step 7: After your gas meter is installed, your chosen gasfitter will be able to convert/install your gas appliances and outlet service, and they will commission the site for natural gas. Once that's done, you're ready to start using and enjoying your natural gas appliances!
