Victoria - Natural Gas for Cooking, Hot Water and Heating
In Victoria, most homes have natural gas cooking and hot water supply, with either gas ducted heating or an electric heat pump.
An average Melbourne home with natural gas cooking and an instantaneous hot water system uses 21Gj of gas per year. Current annual costs will be around $844, compared to $939 for comparable electric cooking and hot water system (on a standard tariff) - that’s a saving of $95 per year.
And your carbon emissions will be 76% lower than those from electric appliances due to approximately 70% of network electricity is generated from coal power stations. South Australia - Natural Gas for Cooking, Hot Water and Heating
In South Australia, most homes have natural gas cooking and hot water supply, and may use gas heating or an electric heat pump.
An average Adelaide home with natural gas cooking and an instantaneous water system uses 19Gj of gas per year. The annual costs will be around $1,173, compared to $1,483 for using electric cooking and hot water (on a standard tariff) - that’s a saving of $310 per year.
With natural gas cooking and hot water you can save money, have more reliable, controlled cooking and hot water and also reduce your carbon emissions by up to 36% over electric appliances running on grid electricity. Although South Australia has a higher renewable electricity than other states, 42% is still from non renewable sources.
In South Australia natural gas heating is popular in a range of applications, from the comfortable warmth of ducted heating to decorative gas fireplaces, or economical space heaters. Using on average a total of 27Gj of gas and including natural gas living room heating, your annual costs will be around $1,366 compared to electric of $1,783 - that's a saving of $416 per year. And your carbon emissions will be 23% lower than for the electric appliances.
